Shaft Encoder Patent, sho.k.®proof

Long-term shock resistance up to 500g – no problem for a newly patented generation of encoders from THALHEIM.

The New, Patented Generation of Shaft Encoders from THALHEIM

“The new ITD 40 Y138 series combines proven shaft encoder technology with our sho.k.®proof patented shock and vibration protection design”, notes Gerhard Vock, CEO of THALHEIM GmbH & Co. KG in Eschwege: “In addition, the shaft encoders are equipped with electrical insulation which ensures effective protection against shaft currents”.

High signal quality, even in the vicinity of powerful electrical equipment, and significantly longer shaft encoder availability cycles even under continuous shock loads up to 500g – these are the efficiency characteristics which should interest not only the cost controllers of operators of conveyor equipment or moulding presses.

In its capacity as an independent testing institute, the Institut für Schwingungstechnik (Institute for Vibration Technology) at the University of Kassel examined the effect of the sho.k.®proof design prior to its introduction to the market. The resulting measurements provide impressive proof of a considerable reduction in the transmission of shock and vibration pulses between the motor shaft and the shaft encoder.

Tubular shaft encoders outfitted with sho.k.®proof already giving proof of their resistance to shock and vibration under harsh practical conditions, for example, on a Norwegian offshore gas drilling rig. Gerhard Vock: “Our experiences have shown a significantly longer anticipated service life for the shaft encoders. Linked to this are reduced investment costs as well as reduced stocks for the customer – bottom line in other words: increased security and efficiency in use.”

A new, patented design characteristic for shaft encoders: Significantly longer availability times – even under continuous shock loads up to 500g.

Measurements made at the University of Kassel (with a 2-kHz filter): Transmission of axial shock forces to the inside of the bearing (left) and onto the shaft encoder housing (right) – Green: conventional shaft encoder / Blue: shaft encoder outfitted with sho.k.®proof.
